Gobindobhog rice: export demand, markets and price

28 June 2026 · Dhamrit

Why Bengal's GI-tagged aromatic is moving to the Gulf and North America, what it sells for, and what overseas buyers check before they order.

What Gobindobhog is

Gobindobhog is a short-grain aromatic rice from West Bengal. The grain is small, plump and creamy white, with a natural sweet smell. It earned a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2017, which ties the name to rice grown in the state. Most of it comes from Bardhaman and the Sundarbans belt.

Bengalis cook it for payesh, the festival kheer, and for special meals. That cultural pull is what drives demand at home and abroad.

Who buys it abroad

The main overseas buyers are the Bengali and Indian diaspora in the UAE, Kuwait, Canada, the UK and the US. Demand climbs before Durga Puja and through the wedding season. It usually sells in small premium retail packs of 1 to 5 kg rather than in bulk containers, so packing and branding matter as much as the grain.

What it costs

Gobindobhog sits well above IR-grade non-basmati. Indicative ex-mill prices run about 60,000 to 82,000 rupees per tonne, which is 60 to 82 rupees per kg. Prices tend to rise ahead of the festive season as buyers stock up. Check our live board for the current number.

What buyers check before they order

Three things decide a Gobindobhog order: that the grain is genuine GI-grade and not a look-alike sold under the name, that the aroma and polish are consistent, and that moisture and broken percentage are in spec. A third-party quality certificate settles most of this before the rice ships.

Sourcing Gobindobhog

We buy genuine GI-grade Gobindobhog to spec, arrange independent QC, and handle bagging and export papers. Indicative ex-mill ₹60,000–₹82,000/MT.
